Penguin Cometh – SEO Crackdown in 2013 & Beyond

Matt Cutts, the spam tzar from Google has just released a new video detailing what webmasters can look forward to in the world of SEO in the coming months.

Unsurprisingly, a large part of this is the continued crackdown on low quality and manipulative SEO practices intended to artificially inflate a site’s position and visibility in Google search and a push to drive quality of results ever upwards – as that is what keeps us all using Google right?

The video

The video is certainly worth a watch and there is a great overview of the topics covered over at Search Engine Land. We also take a quick look below at what this means for business owners large and small across the web.

What does this mean for you?

Well, that depends on what kind of SEO have you done? Do you even know? If you suspect that historically your SEO may have strayed outside of the Google Webmaster Guidelines then you could be in trouble. You may even already be in trouble and that could be about to get a whole lot worse.

If your SEO has been low quality you may see a further loss of equity as Google relentlessly chips away at low-quality links and further improves their link analysis skills – there is not a lot left now of low quality that is counting in a positive way.

If you have only ever played by the book and focused on content and sharing your knowledge and honest SEO and website marketing such as Local SEO and high-quality link buildings like guest posts on AAA sites then you should continue to see improvements in your results as some of the competition see their shaky foundations collapse under them.

Worried?

Take a look at your site, is there anything there that is only there for a search engine or that someone told you would improve your SEO? Take a look at your links in Open Site Explorer. Are they all using anchor text terms you want to rank for? Are they from comments on sites that have little or nothing to do with your business?

If you are worried get in touch and we can give you some quick feedback to determine whether you need to dig deeper or have some cleaning up to do. Likewise, this is proving to be a great leveller so if you want to promote a local or small business there has never been a better time to get started.
